Komiža

The quieter side of Vis — a fishing town, beach base, sunset spot, and gateway to Biševo and the Blue Cave

About Komiža

Komiža is the more enclosed, atmospheric side of Vis. It sits in a bay on the western side of the island, backed by hills and facing the open sea. The town has long fishing traditions, a compact waterfront, stone houses, small beaches, and a slower rhythm than Vis Town.

Most travellers come for one of three reasons: to stay somewhere quieter on Vis, to take a boat trip to Biševo and the Blue Cave, or to use Komiža as a beach-and-evening base. It is not large, and that is part of the appeal. You can see the town quickly, but it rewards staying still.

Komiža is especially good for couples, independent travellers, and anyone who prefers atmosphere over convenience. Vis Town has the ferry port and easier logistics. Komiža has the mood.

What to See & Do

Komiža Waterfront

The waterfront is the centre of the town, with fishing boats, cafés, restaurants, and views across the bay. It is best in the morning or evening when the light is low and the town is quiet.

Beaches around Komiža

There are several small beaches in and near town. They are not large resort beaches, but they are easy, local, and good for swimming in clear Adriatic water.

Biševo and the Blue Cave

Komiža is the main starting point for boat trips to Biševo and the Blue Cave. Access depends on weather and sea conditions — trips are typically available from spring through early autumn.

Mount Hum and Viewpoints

The road above Komiža gives some of the best views on Vis, especially at sunset. Mount Hum, the island's highest point, is accessible by road and worth the short detour.

How to Get There

First travel by ferry or catamaran from Split to Vis Town. Jadrolinija operates year-round ferry services, and catamarans run in the summer season. From Vis Town, continue to Komiža by local bus, taxi, rental car, or scooter. The road crosses the island and takes around 15–20 minutes by car.

Komiža has limited parking in summer when the town is busy. If you are staying overnight, check with your accommodation about parking options. A rental car or scooter from Vis Town gives the most flexibility for exploring both sides of the island.

When to Visit

June and September are ideal — busy enough to have atmosphere, calm enough to avoid peak crowds. July and August are lively but more crowded by Vis standards. May and October can be excellent if weather and boat services cooperate.

Yes. Komiža is the classic starting point for Biševo and Blue Cave boat trips. Weather matters — if seas are rough, trips are cancelled. Book locally and stay flexible with your timing.

Two nights is enough for a first visit — time for the town, a beach day, and a Blue Cave trip. Longer if you want a genuinely slow Vis stay.
