Practical Planning Tips
Key things to know before visiting Croatia's national parks and nature areas.
Best Season
April–June / September–October
Best for hiking, waterfalls and lighter crowds. July and August suit island nature but parks are busier and coastal mountains are hot and exposed.
Book Ahead
Plitvice, Krka and popular boat trips
Timed-entry parks and summer boat excursions can sell out. Book online a few days ahead in July and August.
Swimming Rules
Check before you swim
Swimming is banned in parts of several national parks, including Skradinski Buk at Krka (banned since 2021). Always check current park rules.
Footwear
Boardwalks and mountain trails
Boardwalk parks can be slippery — grippy trainers help. Biokovo, Paklenica and Velebit need proper hiking boots.
Heat and Exposure
Coastal mountains in summer
Biokovo, Paklenica and Velebit trails are exposed in summer. Start early, carry 1.5–2 litres per person and bring a windproof layer for ridges.
Transport
Car, bus and boat
Most parks are easiest by car. Plitvice, Paklenica and Krka have bus links from the coast. Kornati, Brijuni and Telašćica need boat excursions.
Families
Easy and harder options
Plitvice, Krka, Rastoke, Mljet and Brijuni suit most families. Biokovo and Velebit routes need children comfortable on long, uneven terrain.
Accessibility
Check before you go
Boardwalk parks have steps, slopes and seasonal route changes. Check each park's website for current accessibility details.
