Delnice
The main town of Gorski Kotar at around 700 metres above sea level — a practical base for Risnjak National Park, dense beech forests, and a quiet corner of Croatia's highland interior
About Delnice
Delnice is a small town in Gorski Kotar, Croatia's highland interior, sitting at around 700 metres above sea level between Zagreb and Rijeka. The surrounding landscape is dense beech and fir forest, with clean mountain air and noticeably cooler temperatures than the coast year-round. It is not a resort town — most visitors use it as a practical base for reaching the national park and the forests of Gorski Kotar.
The nearest national park, Risnjak National Park, is the main reason people stop in Delnice. Risnjak's highest peak, Veliki Risnjak at 1,528 metres, is reachable on a full-day trail and rewards on clear days with views across to the Adriatic. The area is home to brown bears, lynx, wolves, and chamois — wildlife density here is among the highest in Croatia.

What to Do Around Delnice
Risnjak National Park
Enter the park from Crni Lug village, about 10 kilometres south of Delnice. Well-marked trails lead through old-growth forest to viewpoints and to the summit of Veliki Risnjak (1,528 m). The park is named after the lynx — Ris in Croatian — once native here and now slowly returning. Allow a full day for the summit route.
Hiking and Forest Trails
Gorski Kotar has an extensive network of marked trails through beech and fir forest. Several routes start directly from Delnice or from nearby villages, ranging from gentle valley walks to longer ridge hikes. The forest is dense and the terrain is genuinely quiet — very different from the coastal national parks.
Petehovac Ski Area
Petehovac is a small ski area near Delnice, with slopes at around 1,035 metres altitude and approximately 0.4 kilometres of runs served by one lift. It suits beginners and families rather than experienced skiers. The season depends on snowfall and typically runs from December to March in a good year.
Gateway to Gorski Kotar
Delnice sits midway on the A6 motorway between Zagreb and Rijeka, making it the natural starting point for exploring Gorski Kotar by car. The surrounding area includes smaller villages, lakes, and forest roads — Lokvar lake is a short drive west and is worth a stop for its forested shoreline.

When to Visit
June to September offers the best hiking conditions. Temperatures at 700 metres stay comfortable when the coast is at its hottest, making Delnice and Gorski Kotar a genuine alternative for anyone who wants to avoid the summer crowds. The forest is at its densest and most atmospheric in late summer.
Winter brings snow to Gorski Kotar reliably most years, making Petehovac ski area operational and the forest landscapes striking. The town itself is quiet in winter, but the combination of snow, forest, and clean mountain air makes it appealing for visitors who enjoy the cold.
