Timing Your Trip

When to go

Inland Croatia rewards visitors year-round, but spring and autumn offer the best combination of pleasant weather, fewer crowds and stunning natural colours.

Ideal

April – June

Pleasant temperatures, vibrant greenery and fewer tour buses at Plitvice. Spring brings the waterfalls at their most powerful after snowmelt, while early summer is warm and perfect for walking both Zagreb and the national park.

  • Pleasant temperatures
  • Vibrant greenery
  • Fewer tour buses
Autumn Colours

September – October

Golden autumn light, fewer visitors and beautiful foliage across the park and countryside. October is particularly atmospheric at Plitvice as the forests turn shades of orange and gold. Zagreb's café culture is at its best in the cooler months.

  • Golden autumn light
  • Quieter atmosphere
  • Beautiful foliage
Off-Season

Winter

Quieter and more atmospheric, with the chance of snow-covered waterfalls at Plitvice — a dramatic and less-visited experience. Zagreb comes alive with its famous Christmas markets. Some facilities around the park may have reduced hours.

  • Snow-covered waterfalls
  • Very few visitors
  • Zagreb Christmas markets
