Best Beaches in Hvar
Secluded coves, island lagoons, and pebble beaches along one of the Adriatic's most beautiful coastlines
Hvar Beach Guide
Hvar island is surrounded by some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean. From the iconic Dubovica cove and the turquoise lagoons of the Pakleni Islands to the dramatic cliff-backed beaches of the southern coast, there is a perfect swimming spot for every taste.
Most beaches here are pebble or rocky rather than sandy — but the water is so stunningly clear and warm that you will not mind one bit. Here are the best beaches in and around Hvar.

Dubovica Beach
One of the most photographed beaches in Croatia, Dubovica is a stunning cove south of Hvar Town framed by olive groves and a centuries-old stone house. The sheltered bay has beautifully clear turquoise water that is calm even when the sea is rough elsewhere. The setting feels untouched and timeless.
Location: 8 km south of Hvar Town, accessible by car or boat
Facilities: Limited — small seasonal beach bar, no sunbeds
Best for: Photography, swimming in crystal-clear water, a quieter escape

Pakleni Islands Beaches
The Pakleni archipelago just offshore from Hvar Town offers some of the best swimming in the Adriatic. Palmizana on St. Klement is the most popular, with pine-shaded pebble beaches, a marina, and excellent restaurants. Stipanska and Vlaka bays are quieter options with pristine water.
Location: Water taxi from Hvar Town harbour (10-20 minutes)
Facilities: Restaurants, beach bars, sunbeds at Palmizana
Best for: Island-hopping, snorkelling, all-day beach trips

Hvar Town Beach
The main beach in Hvar Town is a convenient pebble stretch just a short walk from the harbour and main square. While not the most secluded spot on the island, its easy access and proximity to cafes and restaurants make it a practical choice, especially for those without transport.
Location: Hvar Town, walking distance from the main square
Facilities: Sunbeds, showers, nearby cafes and restaurants
Best for: Convenience, families staying in Hvar Town, quick swims

Zarace & Sveta Nedjelja
The dramatic southern coast of Hvar is home to some of the island's most spectacular swimming spots. Zarace is a secluded pebble beach beneath towering cliffs, while Sveta Nedjelja is a small coastal village famous for its vineyards that tumble down to the sea. The water here is exceptionally clean and deep.
Location: Southern coast, accessible by car via mountain roads
Facilities: Basic — small restaurants in Sveta Nedjelja
Best for: Adventure seekers, wine lovers, dramatic scenery

Jelsa Beaches
The charming town of Jelsa on Hvar's northern coast has several family-friendly beaches with calm, shallow waters and pine-shaded shorelines. Mina Beach east of town is particularly popular, with a gentle entry into the sea and playground nearby. The area is less crowded than Hvar Town.
Location: Jelsa, northern coast of Hvar
Facilities: Sunbeds, playgrounds, restaurants, promenade
Best for: Families with children, relaxed beach days, avoiding crowds
Beach Tips for Hvar
Best Time to Swim
The sea around Hvar is warmest from June to September (23-26C). May and October are still pleasant at 19-21C.
Water Shoes Recommended
Most Hvar beaches are pebble or rocky. Water shoes make getting in and out much more comfortable, especially on the southern coast.
Bring Supplies
Many of the best beaches have limited or no facilities. Pack water, snacks, sunscreen, and shade. A beach umbrella is a good idea.
Rent a Boat or Scooter
The best beaches on Hvar are often off the beaten path. Renting a small boat or scooter gives you access to hidden coves that are impossible to reach on foot.
