Novi Vinodolski
A quiet Kvarner coastal town with one of Croatia's oldest surviving legal documents and a decent beach below the hill
About Novi Vinodolski
Novi Vinodolski is a small town on the Kvarner Riviera between Crikvenica (about 12 km north) and Senj (25 km south). The town divides naturally into two parts: the beach and harbour below, where most visitors spend their time, and the old town on the hill above, where most of the history is. The old town is modest — a small fortress, a few churches, streets unchanged in centuries — but the setting above the bay is pleasant.
The reason to know about Novi Vinodolski beyond its beach is the Novi Statute of 1288 — a legal code written in the Glagolitic script that governed life in the Vinodol valley. It is one of the oldest surviving legal documents in any Slavic language, and the original is preserved in Zagreb. A replica and information panels are on display in the town. This does not make Novi Vinodolski a major destination, but it adds something to a visit that would otherwise be primarily about the beach.

What to Visit For
Beach, old town, a medieval legal document, and a quiet coast.
The Beach
The main draw for most visitors. Gravel and pebble; the water is clean and usually calm. Good for swimming from June through September. The harbour area has a promenade with cafes.
The Old Town on the Hill
A small fortress, a few churches, and streets that have not changed much in centuries. The climb is short. The view over the bay from the top is the reward.
The Novi Statute of 1288
One of the oldest surviving legal documents in any Slavic language, written in the Glagolitic script. The original is held in Zagreb; a replica with information panels is on display in town. Worth a look if you are already here.
A Quiet Base on the Kvarner Coast
Useful as an overnight between Rijeka and the islands without Opatija's prices or crowds. Crikvenica is 12 km north. Ferries to Rab leave from Jablanac, 50 km south along the coast.

When to Visit
Summer (June–September) is when Novi Vinodolski works best — the beach is the draw, and the weather is reliable. July and August are the busiest months; the town fills with Croatian families on holiday.
Spring and autumn offer a quieter visit: fewer people, lower prices, and the coastal road in reasonable shape. The off-season is quiet, and some accommodation and restaurants close from October onwards.
