Opatija
An elegant seaside town with Belle Époque architecture, historic promenade and refined coastal atmosphere
About Opatija
Opatija is an elegant seaside town on the northern Adriatic, gracefully set between the green slopes of Mount Učka and the calm waters of Kvarner Bay. Often referred to as the “Adriatic Pearl”, Opatija is known for its refined atmosphere, Belle Époque architecture, manicured parks and historic seaside promenade.
As one of Croatia’s first and most prestigious resort towns, Opatija has long been associated with wellness, leisure and sophisticated coastal living. Grand villas, historic hotels and shaded gardens reflect its past as a favoured retreat of Austro-Hungarian nobility — a legacy that still defines the town’s character today.
Opatija laid the foundations of organised tourism in Croatia, welcoming aristocracy and artists as early as the mid-19th century.
A Glimpse into Opatija’s History
From Monastery to Seaside Resort
The name Opatija derives from the Croatian word for abbey, referring to a Benedictine monastery around which the original settlement developed. In the late 19th century, the construction of the railway connecting Vienna with the Adriatic transformed Opatija into an elite seaside resort.
Elegant villas, landscaped parks and luxury hotels soon followed, attracting emperors, royalty and intellectuals from across Europe. Unlike many Croatian coastal towns shaped by maritime trade, Opatija’s identity grew around health tourism, leisure and refined social life — a character that remains visible in its architecture and atmosphere today.
